After lunch, I buried Spencer and Alex in the sand while Joshua helped Logan build a sand castle. Jessica was our water kid today, spending more time in the water than on land. She was also the only one to get sunburned, probably because her sunblock washed off after being in the water all day. Logan decided after building his sand castle that he also wanted to be buried in the sand. I dug a huge hole for both Alex and Logan, then they sat in their own hole and I poured sand over them. Their little head was the only thing showing. When they decided they wanted to get out, Logan was able to climb out, but Alex couldn't. He was wedged in with no leverage and couldn't move. For awhile, he tried getting out by himself by squirming and wiggling, but he just couldn't do it himself and started crying. I had to dig him out which took longer than I thought (see pictures below). He felt a little humiliated after climbing out, poor guy. Needless to say, I don't think he'll ever want to do that again.
In the late-afternoon, the kids decided they wanted to climb "Pike's Peak", a giant sand dune directly next to the beach. Joshua stayed behind while I climbed the 'peak' with the kids. It was very tall and steep. Behind Pike's Peak is a hidden clay pit. We saw mud-covered people walking out from behind the dunes as we were walking back down the hill. I stopped a group of people who were covered in mud to get directions to the pit, and curiosity lead us to find it even though we didn't know what to expect. It was a bit of a hike, but we found it. It was across a creek and concealed by a bunch of trees, but we followed the noise of people talking and laughing and found some college kids having a mud fight and others sliding down the side of the clay pit into the muddy creek below. Alex, Logan, Jessica and I didn't care to get covered in mud, but Spencer climbed the side of the pit and slid down splashing in the mud (pictures below). He proudly ran back to the beach to show his mud-covered self to Dad. Next year, we'll be more prepared and have a family mud fight, although I think it'll be pretty dangerous to show the mud pit to Dad. We'll all be covered in mud before leaving whether we want to or not if he comes!
We had a great day, and a great weekend. Now, Warren Sand Dunes is one of our most favorite family trips. Here are some pictures from our day at the beach ....
